Why ChatGPT Isn't Recommending Your Business (And How to Fix It)
Your website ranks on Google. Your reviews look healthy. So you assume you are covered.
Then a customer skips Google entirely and asks ChatGPT: "Who is the best tree service in Buffalo?" โ and your business is not in the answer. Not buried on page two. Not there at all.
This is the quiet shift most local business owners have not noticed yet: people are increasingly asking an AI assistant for a recommendation instead of scrolling a list of blue links. And AI does not work like Google. Ranking your website is no longer enough โ you have to be a business the AI trusts enough to name out loud.
We wanted to see how big the gap really is, so we ran a real test.
We checked one real business across three AIs. The result surprised us.
We took a real, well-established tree service in Buffalo, NY โ solid Google profile, 4.9 stars, 148 reviews โ and asked three different AI assistants the exact question a homeowner would type.
Google AI Mode, asked "best tree service in Buffalo", named KD Tree Service, WoodChuck Tree Service and For The Love of Trees. Our business? Not listed as a provider.
Gemini, same question, recommended WoodChuck Tree Service and mapped out Davey, Bartlett, Barden and others. Again, our business was nowhere in the answer.
Here is the twist: on ChatGPT, the same business did get named โ in about two out of every three answers. So it was not invisible everywhere. It was strong on one AI and completely missing from the others โ and the owner had no idea, because nobody checks this.
That is the real problem. It is usually not "you are invisible". It is blind spots โ and every AI answer you are missing from is a customer quietly handed to a competitor.
Why this matters now (not "someday")
A growing share of people looking for a local service never see ten blue links any more โ they get one answer, with a handful of names in it. If you are not one of those names, you never get a chance to compete. Being mentioned is becoming the new #1 spot, and unlike Google rankings, most owners cannot even see whether they are winning it.
The good news: the things that make AI recommend you are mostly the things that already make you a good local business โ you just have to make them legible to a machine.
Why AI is not recommending you (even if your SEO is "good")
Google has always ranked pages. AI assistants recommend entities โ real businesses they can confidently identify, describe and vouch for. If an AI is not sure who you are, what you do and where you operate, in a structured, consistent, well-reviewed way, it simply leaves you out and names someone it is sure about.
So a polished website with great "SEO" can still be invisible to AI, because the AI never received a clear, trustworthy signal that you are a real, recommendable local company.
The 6 things that get you recommended by AI
1. A complete, verified Google Business Profile
This is the single strongest signal. Verified, fully filled in (categories, services, hours, description, photos) and actively maintained. An unverified or half-empty profile is the fastest way to get skipped.
2. Reviews โ volume, recency and replies
AI leans heavily on reviews as a trust proxy. It is not just your star rating; it is how many, how recent, and whether you actually respond. A steady stream of fresh reviews with owner replies signals a living, trusted business.
3. Consistent name, address and phone everywhere
If your details differ across your website, Google and directories, AI loses confidence that you are one clear entity. Consistency equals trust.
4. Natural-language answers on your site (with FAQ schema)
Add an FAQ section that answers the exact questions customers ask โ "How much does tree removal cost in Buffalo?", "Do you offer emergency service?" โ in plain language, then mark it up with FAQ schema. That is content in the format machines actually read.
5. Content that names what you do and where
Service plus city, stated clearly and repeatedly (without keyword-stuffing). "Emergency tree removal in Buffalo, NY" beats a vague "we do trees".
6. Mentions on trusted third-party sites
Being referenced on local directories, community pages and review sites tells AI you are a real, corroborated entity โ not just a self-published web page.
How to check whether AI recommends your business
Do it yourself in 30 seconds: open ChatGPT (then Gemini, then Google AI Mode) and ask "best [your service] in [your city]" a few times. Are you named? Are your competitors? That gap is your to-do list.
Or let us do it for you. We built a free AI Visibility Check that asks the real questions across AI assistants and tells you exactly how often you are named โ no signup, no card.
You get your real mention rate โ and if there are gaps, exactly what is causing them.

Frequently asked questions
Why is ChatGPT not recommending my business?
Usually because AI cannot confidently identify you as a trustworthy local entity โ an incomplete or unverified Google Business Profile, too few or stale reviews, inconsistent business details across the web, or a website that does not clearly state what you do and where. Fixing those signals is what gets you named.
Is AI visibility different from Google SEO?
Yes. Google ranks web pages; AI assistants recommend businesses they trust. You can rank well on Google and still be missing from AI answers, because AI weighs verified profiles, reviews, consistency and structured information more than page rankings.
How do I check if ChatGPT or Gemini recommends my business?
Ask each assistant "best [your service] in [your city]" a few times and see if you are named. Or run a free AI Visibility Check that tests the real questions across assistants and reports how often you appear.
How long does it take to show up in AI recommendations?
It is not instant. As your verified profile, review flow, consistency and content improve, AI gradually gains the confidence to name you. Businesses that keep those signals fresh get named more often over time.
Do reviews really affect AI recommendations?
Yes โ significantly. Review volume, recency and your replies are among the strongest trust signals AI uses when deciding which local businesses are worth recommending.
